Deponia Demo
Escape from the desolate world of Deponia and go on an adventure in this colorful point-and-click game. #Garbage planet #Adventure game #Point and click #Planet #Garbage #Adventure
Unique adventure games have managed to impress the world decades ago, ever since titles like Monkey Island and Another World. However, a lot of work must go into them in order to appeal to the public, especially when it comes to story, characters, and the general gameplay features. Not only that, but they must also pose a decent challenge as far as the puzzles go.
Deponia tries very hard to resurrect some of the same elements found in the aforementioned classic titles, while adding a bit of originality and inspirations from other mediums. Hence, according to the developers themselves, you might feel a touch of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy every now again, or even catch a glimpse of some Terry Pratchett’s Discworld from time to time.
In essence, the story talks about a young man by the name of Rufus, who happens to be living in a city made entirely out of garbage. He is obviously unhappy about it, but it’s not like he has too much of a choice, given the fact that he is poor. One day, he hatches a plan to get out and reach Elysium, which is the suspended world above the clouds where the rich folk live.
The game’s greatest attraction is the writing itself, because the story is sublime and you can tell that the writers knew what they were doing. The same thing can be said about the dialogue between the characters, most of which is a combination of sarcasm and silly one-liners. Plot-wise, the events unfold in a pretty exciting manner along the way, which makes you want to see how everything ends.
As far as the puzzles are concerned, they are intricate enough to require imagination and a bit of tinkering, but not so complicated as to make you quit the game. Most of them revolve around being able to spot the right combination of items, but there are a few that require you to think outside the box and make use of the environment to your advantage.
When it’s all said and done, Deponia is certainly the kind of game that sticks with you forever, especially if you enjoy a good story and you do not mind having to do a bit of thinking along the way. The graphics look great and a lot of work went into designing the intricate environments.
