Many empires have been a part of this world in the past, including some that have managed to transform and evolve into modern countries. However, even the mightiest empires have fallen at one point or another, even if today it seems like such big nations would be unstoppable. On the other hand, there were also a few outstanding defenses throughout history, which were made possible thanks to pure determination.
Defense of Egypt is a tower defense game that challenges you to stop wave after wave of enemies using a combination of damage-dealing buildings. As the name clearly states, the whole thing revolves around the ancient civilization of Egypt, so the methods you use to defend are inspired by their technology. Magic is present as well, on the other hand, so don’t expect historical accuracy.
The first few missions allow you to use only a handful of towers, such as ballistae and trebuchets, as well as one tower that uses magic. However, you can upgrade them to more powerful versions, even if nothing but their size and damage is actually different. More towers become available later on, and they start to get more specialized on particular types of enemies.
Certain groups of enemies use defensive formations to block attacks, such as shield barriers. They can be overwhelmed with enough damage, but it’s worth noting that sometimes it’s much more efficient to just use the right type of attack. You can also change between a variety of magic attacks, since every kind of spell has drawbacks and advantages.
Lastly, the annoying part is that you have only a handful of fixed positions to place your towers, which greatly reduces the number of strategies you can use. Although this sometimes forces you to think more rather than compensate with more turrets, the truth is that it also limits the replay value of the game. Even if you upgrade the towers between missions, you can only use a few of them at a time anyway.
In the end, Defense of Egypt can still prove to be a fun game with enough content to keep you busy for hours, but it can also get boring much faster than that. In short, the biggest drawback is the fact that you are limited by the fixed tower spots and linear gameplay.
