As it was proven so many times over the years, bringing people together in video games can be a great thing, and it can sometimes assure the survival of a certain franchise. Hence, many games are only alive today thanks to the fact that the community is still going strong. This is much harder to achieve with single player experiences, especially in the case of a linear story that is always the same.
Death Squared is a puzzle game for two or four players in which people have to work together in order to solve levels and overcome a variety of challenges. Coordination and teamwork are extremely important, given the fact that traps pop up if you take a wrong step, and you can even kill other players by moving too much sometimes. Hence, there’s definitely a lot of potential here.
To begin with, the players take on the roles of simple cubes, and the goal is to guide them to specific checkpoints around the mazes. This is pretty easy at first, but once more mechanics are added to the mix it gets a lot more challenging. Hence, sometimes you have to move in unison with the other player in order to stay alive, while other times one of you must do most of the work.
There are both two and four-player levels, but the mechanics remain the same regardless of how the mode. Obviously, it’s trickier for four people to coordinate, but the accomplishments are that much more impressive at the end of the day. There’s also a collection of stand-alone levels included in the game, which were too difficult to be part of the main story.
As for the graphics, you shouldn’t expect an awful lot in this regard, but then again they matter very little under the circumstances. You can clearly see the maps and the players, which is the most important thing of all. On top of that, the controls are very responsive as well, which means that you cannot blame bad input if you happen to make a mistake. The low graphics quality also allows you to run the game on basically any computer.
In the end, there are not many games like Death Squared out there, and it’s nice to see something different for a change. It’s even possible to play through the game on your own if you are dedicated enough and you do not mind the multitasking.
