The future is always uncertain, no matter how bright it might seem at a glance to the people looking forward to it. Unforeseen circumstances can change everything in a matter of seconds, which is why it is so difficult to tell how the future is going to look or feel. If you have any doubts, then you should check out what people from a century ago believed about the year 2000.
Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today is an exercise into a few philosophical themes that may or may not bug you every once so often. The meaning of existence and what would happen if humanity’s time on this planet suddenly had a limit are the main questions in the game, although the action is not that abstract. In essence, this is a point-and-click adventure that features all the usual gameplay mechanics seen over the years in similar games.
The story revolves around a man by the name of Michael, who wakes up in what appears to be a dystopian society without any memory of what happened before. As some of the other people meets inform him, a Great Wave destroyed all the electronic devices and reverted humanity back to the dark ages, which is why everyone is now dying and living in shelters. On top of that, a mysterious and deadly disease is spreading like wildfire, which makes things even more complicated for the survivors.
Right from the start, you can tell that the developers went the extra mile to create a heavy atmosphere, which sticks with you even after you leave the game. Everything is bleak and washed out, while the soundtrack presses down on you as well. The writing is superb and the dialogs are always insightful, although you can find the occasional mistake here and there.
The graphics are very artistic as well, especially when it comes to the environments and the general style. While the characters are not exactly detailed, they can be very expressive when the situation requires it, although there are no smooth animations to portray that. However, you can use your imagination and rely on subtle visual cues to get in the proper mood.
In the end, Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today is one of the better adventure games to have come out on the subject of mortality and death, although it didn’t receive as much attention as it probably deserved. However, there’s certainly something here, and you can have a great time playing the game.
