Time travel is still a rather far away dream, since the technology required to achieve it is not really feasible at the moment. That does not stop people from imagining it, however, since there are plenty of movies and video games that tackle with the idea and present you with an interesting tale. The game at hand takes a stab at it as well, but it includes some other fascinating elements as well.

Darkest of Days is a first-person shooter that allows you to travel through time and witness the greatest and most gruesome battles in human history, as well as participate in them and try to change their outcome, in order to make the present a little bit better. Thanks to your superior technology, it can be quite fun and entertaining to devastate the enemy soldiers with high-caliber sub-machine guns, when all they have are muskets.

That is actually one of the main attractions of the game, since it really gives you a real sense of power, but it doesn't make it so easy as to quickly become boring. Hence, it is still very possible to get shot and die, even if the enemy needs thirty seconds in order to reload and loses all accuracy after one hundred meters. The enemy also happens to outnumber your forces most of the time, which also helps a great deal.

The gameplay is nothing if not intuitive and fun, although it certainly does not revolutionize anything about the genre and it practically blends in with the crowd in this regard. A large variety of different weapons helps a lot, too, since you can wield anything from futuristic rifles, to muskets, old revolves and various other gadgets, each one of which has a certain feel and requires a bit of practice before you are able to take proper advantage of it.

Visually, the developers were stubborn enough to create their own proprietary engine from scratch, which, although looks pretty good, is not impressive at all. The work could have gone into the gameplay instead, since a third-party engine could have saved them a lot of time. It does look rather pretty, on the other hand, especially when it comes to the environments and the characters themselves.

Darkest of Days is not very original and not very good either, but it can provide you with a breath of fresh air, in case you are tired of jungles and gray cities. The time travel gimmick can be incredibly entertaining, especially when you get to go head-to-head with technologically impaired soldiers during the American Civil War.
