The Greek mythology is full of interesting tales of love, hatred and revenge, which is why so many of the stories have been turned into movies and TV shows. On the other hand, video games have a fair share of the market as well, and there are plenty of them featuring heroes like Hercules, Perseus and Achilles in the main role.

Dark Romance: Kingdom of Death is a hidden object adventure game in which you get to play as two characters intermittently and help both of them reunite and defeat their enemies. While the game does not feature too many unexpected elements for an HOPA, the level and puzzle design is actually quite impressive, and it really feels like an adventure, which is something that cannot be said about most games in the genre.

As such, the story starts when Hades kidnaps his niece and puts her deep underground from where she cannot escape by herself. Thankfully, she manages to send a message to her lover Elias, who then goes on a mission to rescue her. You play as both of these characters, since they need to cooperate in order to achieve their plans and escape the wrath of the gods.

Although the usual hidden object scenes are quite simple and to the point, some of the puzzles can be pretty challenging, at least if you do not have enough experience with games such as this one. A bit of creative thinking is required, but none of the riddles are so complicated as to require too much effort. There’s a skip button that allows you to immediately jump over a particularly annoying puzzle.

Naturally, the game loses its charm if you do this too often, so it’s recommendable that you take the time to figure out most challenges. By doing so you also get to admire the beautiful scenery and imagine yourself back in ancient times. Thankfully, the graphics are gorgeous in almost every regard, except maybe for the rather stiff cutscenes that may ruin the mood every now and again.

In the end, Dark Romance: Kingdom of Death truly does almost everything right, from puzzles and the story, all the way to graphics and the soundtrack. Hence, if you’ve got a few hour on your hand, this could certainly provide you with quite the adventure.
