Action-platformers are designed to challenge your reflexes and your ability to navigate difficult obstacles, while also battling enemies without dying. However, it’s a tad difficult to dazzle the fans of the genre nowadays, given the fact that there are hundreds of games out there that have all but tried everything. Even so, a new story and a fresh take on the subject can work its magic.

Dark Devotion is a dark action-platformer with RPG elements, in which your goal is to explore a fallen temple and deal with the mysteries that lie there. Not only that, but you also have to overcome a variety of deadly traps and defeat countless enemies that try to stop your progress, which is far from easy. Thankfully, there are many customization options that make the adventure feel more rewarding.

To begin with, the RPG elements are pretty well implemented, since you can change weapons and various armor pieces in order to make your character stronger. Another important factor is Faith, which can be collected from fallen enemies and used to open special chests, as well as to unlock secrets paths to hidden levels. It’s a great way to keep the players engaged, especially if you like puzzles.

Speaking of which, the game features another interesting gimmick in terms of level exploration, because most stages have multiple routes you can take in order to reach the end. However, there’s no going back once you pick a path, because all doors close behind you as soon as you go through them. Some routes are more difficult than others, but the real treat is the fact that you can re-play the game multiple times with different results.

Lastly, the retro graphics can be a bit of a cliche at this point, but in this case the artists have really given it their best shot, and it’s obvious in the artwork department. Some of the environments look rather repetitive, but every now and again you can marvel at incredibly detailed backgrounds, not to mention the neatly crafted cutscenes that explain the story.

Even if it doesn’t bring too many revolutionary ideas, Dark Devotion is still a very strong action-platformer, especially when you factor in the RPG elements and the graphics. Hence, it’s worth a shot if you are a veteran of the genre.
