As most people find out after being alive for for a while, life doesn’t go according to plan most of the time, so you are forced to improvise and compromise every now and again. Dreams only come true if they are small, and sometimes hard work is not enough to assure a good living. Giving up is not the solution, however, because there are always people out there who are on your side.
Daddy Lies is an interesting visual novel that puts you in the role of a gay young man as he tries to raise his child by working as hard as he can to put food on the table. The game is designed with multiple routes and choices in mind, but the demo at hand is pretty short, so don’t expect an awful lot in this regard yet. Even so, there’s definitely potential here, especially since the writing is pretty solid.
The main character’s name is Finn, and his childhood dreams included being a politician and a famous piano player in order to make his father happy. Unfortunately, his father throws him out when he finds out that he is a homosexual, which is when both of his dreams crumble to nothing. Now, he must support his daughter by working long hours in places he doesn’t really enjoy.
As mentioned before, you can make certain choices along the way that alter the story, which means that you can go through the game multiple times in order to experience different events. Finn’s life is bound to get better, however, because he meets a few interesting characters along the way that help him overcome his condition and get more joy out of life, regardless of his hardships.
The artwork is not bad at all, even if there are some placeholders every now and again. Most of the characters are very nicely designed and not too over-the-top, in spite of the obvious anime influences in this regard. Naturally, the game is going to get better in this regard once the development process advances, especially since the artists are clearly quite talented.
Daddy Lies might be a bit more depressing than your typical visual novel, but it can also be inspiring and uplifting at times. Hence, it’s worth a shot, and we can only hope that the developers keep working on it.
