There are many things that make or break a racing game, but as it’s always the case with video games, it’s the overall fun factor that matters the most. Players can overlook gameplay issues or bad graphics if they are having fun, and the statement is all the more true for arcade games. Hence, once realism is out of the picture, developers are free to integrate a variety of interesting ideas.
Cube Racer is a simple racing game in which you control a cube as you make your way across tracks full of traps and obstacles, with the ultimate goal being to reach the finish line as quickly as possible. There are both single and multiplayer modes, and it would appear that the multiplayer is where most of the fun is at, given the fact that new mechanics are introduced once more players join a race.
There are about two dozen maps included with the game, each one of which features a different layout with various obstacles. However, the best part is that the players can add their own traps on them as the rounds progress, thus making things a bit harder for the other racers. This is also an attempt to keep the players from just learning the levels by heart and having an advantage over newcomers, which is a nice touch.
To keep things simple, there aren’t many things your cube can do other than move around and jump. Thankfully, you can also wall-jump, which is required in order to get past some of the obstacles out there. However, the controls are a bit stiff, mainly when it comes to turning, because you can only turn in fixed increments and there is no way to rotate the camera independently. This can take a while to get used to, but it’s not a particularly frustrating feature.
There’s a map editor included with the game as well, which allows you to create your own challenges and even share them with other people. The graphics are pretty basic in terms of object design and landscapes, but it goes well with the theme of the game, not to mention the fact that this also allows people with slower computers to enjoy the racing as well.
Cube Racer is definitely worth a try if you are into arcade races/platforming challenges, especially since the game comes with a lot of content. The multiplayer is very engaging, and the map editor should extend the game’s life by quite a bit.
