In theory, dungeon crawlers have a very straightforward idea at their core, but it’s a whole different story to design and develop them. Even if the mechanics are mostly the same regardless of the game you choose, it’s very difficult for the developers to get the right mixture of action, exploration and survival. Thus, it’s easy to make a dungeon crawler, but it’s very hard to make it a good one.
Crypt of the Serpent King is a first-person dungeon crawler that tries to provide you with a fast-paced experience and the freedom to approach the adventure in a variety of ways. Unfortunately, it fails to deliver on its promises, mainly because the action is very rough and annoying, the controls are badly implemented, and the level design is incredibly repetitive.
You have the freedom to customize your character slightly at the beginning of the game, but all you can actually change are the two weapons you can carry. Maces, axes and hatchets are available to choose from, but most have to be unlocked first. You can also go for a ranged weapon such as a crossbow or a bow, depending on how you like to play.
Most of your time is spent exploring the dungeons and killing the enemies that try to stop you. It’s actually very annoying to use a melee weapon, because no matter how quick you are the opponent can still hit back once you get close enough to strike. Hence, you are bound to take damage in every encounter, unless of course you resort to a ranged weapon and keep your distance.
As mentioned before, the most annoying thing about the game is how repetitive it gets after only a few minutes of gameplay. Hence, you first notice that each level features only one type of enemy, and that every level is almost the same in regards to corridor design and layout. Given the fact that you are supposed to keep playing for hours on end, this is definitely not a good trait for a dungeon crawler.
All things considered, Crypt of the Serpent King is not nearly as engaging as it needs to be to keep you playing for more than a few minutes. Thus, it’s way too simple and repetitive remain entertained over long gameplay sessions, which is the whole point of the genre.
