Video game characters always seem to have enough spare time to wander about in search of adventures, as well as the luck to always stumble into something worth leaving everything else behind for. Naturally, the unspoken rules of fantasy dictate that the protagonist always gets out alive and well, which is definitely good news for the main characters.

Crazy Island is a lightweight adventure game with a few role-playing elements thrown into the mix, to make matters more interesting. Survival is also part of the equation, since you need to build stuff in order to make due and gather the materials required for building a raft. However, things are not as easy as they sound, because a lot of factors have to be taken into consideration along the way.

To begin with, there are five characters to choose from, each one of which has specific skills and abilities. However, these abilities can be improved by consistently making use of them, so you are not necessarily stuck with a particular set of stats. Hence, chopping wood on a regular basis steadily increases your skill level, although you need to do it a lot in order to get significantly faster.

The island is also populated by some less-than-pleasant critters, some of which can’t resist the urge to attack you when you happen to walk past them. Thus, carnivorous plants constantly want to nibble on your flesh if you let them, although they can easily be dispensed with. Melee attacks are quite powerful most of the time, especially since the creatures are not particularly strong either.

From a technical point of view, the game is not exactly state-of-the-art, and it actually looks quite cheap and rushed. The models are very crude and choppy, while the environments are way too barren and basic to help you slip into the proper atmosphere. The animations are just as basic, which makes it that much more difficult to have fun most of the time.

When it’s all said and done, Crazy Island had the chance to be much more than it got to be, especially thanks to the sandbox elements packed into it. However, the actual game is very crude and unpolished, so it won’t really appeal to more serious gamers.
