The world of indie video games is pretty lively lately, thanks to the multitude of easy-to-use development tools released to the public in the last few years. Hence, even beginners can create sharp-looking games using the Unity engine, which means that everyone can express their ideas and see whether they’ve got what it takes to make it in the industry.
Crazy Cross is a 3D role-playing game with heavy Final Fantasy influences, at least when it comes to gameplay and graphics. The game also shares the anime-style characters and the exaggerated haircuts, together with the over-the-top dialogue and a few other such oriental customs. The combat system is turn-based as well, complete with special abilities and powerful items.
The story is loosely conveyed through a few cutscenes and bits of dialogue here and there, none of which really make any sense. In fact, the game is a continuation to an older game produced by the same studio and it sort of starts where the other one left off. Hence, you play a character by the name of Crazy Lou, who wakes up in a hospital, only to find out that no one seems to remember him.
There are very few good things to say about this game, none of which are important enough be to disclosed. Gameplay-wise, everything is a mess and it even manages to be more awkward than Final Fantasy was three decades ago, which is saying something. The controls are horrible, the voice acting is exaggerated and painful, while the music plays randomly and it never seems to be on point with what happens on the screen.
Speaking of which, the graphics engine is as basic as it can get, with about ten different textures used to portray the environments and even less character models. There are no objects on the streets or in the buildings, other than the walls and a single bed in the hospital. However, the game makes up for it through the unending enemy encounters, which happen every other two steps and it’s always against the same enemy.
In the end, it is quite clear that Crazy Cross is made by a few dedicated people who wanted to put their ideas and thoughts into practice, without worrying about user experience, money, or ease-of-use. However, you do need to know its flaws before you try it out, just so you don’t expect anything more once you give it a try.
