CounterAttack is a side-scrolling shooter that brings back the old days for this genre, while injecting it with some modern ideas and technologies.
Side-scrolling shooters used to be very famous a few decades ago when they were mostly played on arcade machines. You had to put money in, and you only had three lives, but then the personal computer become all powerful, and the gaming moved to this platform, along with the side-scrolling shooters.
The people who used to play these game on arcade machines, don’t play as much today as they used to, so the demand for games like this one isn’t what it used to be. That’s why we get really happy when a new game makes it way into this genre. CounterAttack does a lot of things right, but it’s not the second coming.
Like most side-scrolling shooters, CounterAttack has some ridiculous story about alien forces and you defending humanity. It’s nothing to write home about, and you can skip it without feeling bad about it. After all, you’re trying this game for the challenge.
Players have a few ships to choose from (only two in the demo), and they have various powers. It has a second and more devastating attack the destroys pretty much anything on the screen, and a second perk that can activate as a cost. It’s what you would expect.
CounterAttack is a little bit different when it comes to enemies. They usually fly in predictable paths, but there are a lot of them, and they don’t leave once they left the screen on the left side. They tend to stay for quite a while, especially since weapons are not usually powerful enough to destroy them at once.
There are more powerful ships that tend to keep up with your movements, and there is a boss at the end of each level.
The game is built on the Unity engine, and it looks fairly good. It still has some rough edges, and it would benefit from smoother animations, but overall it has good production value.
The demo is pretty short, and only gives access to only two ships, but it will soon be available on Steam.
