It’s a wonder that the current video game market is not bombarded with action-adventure flicks, especially since indie developers have more options at their disposal than ever. The genre is very flexible and dynamic, because it allows for a variety of gameplay mechanics, and there’s plenty of room left for innovation as well.
Cornerstone: The Song of Tyrim certainly takes advantage of everything modern technology has to offer, especially in the gameplay department. It may figure as an action-adventure game on paper, but it includes puzzles, crafting, combat, and physics-based interaction with the environment. All of these elements come together to create an engaging and unique experience, although not without flaws.
The story revolves around Tyrim, a young Viking boy with a dream. In short, his quest is all about returning the lost people of Borja, while also exploring the world of Nygard and unraveling its mysteries. Obviously, the journey is dangerous and unpredictable, but the rewards are worth the risk. Besides saving the lost Vikings, Tyrim might also get his hands on a few powerful relics and artifacts, which is every adventurer’s dream.
As mentioned before, the gameplay is dynamic and engaging, which is thanks to all the different elements that comprise it. Most of your time is spent trying to solve quests, but the way you tackle them is different every time. Whether you sneak around trying not to attract unwanted attention or you throw random objects at enemies, the action is always engaging.
One of the most intriguing aspects is the crafting system, which allows you to use the resources you find along the way in order to repair broken objects, create weapons, or devise various items that allow you to solve quests. The graphics are vibrant and colorful, while the level design is inspired and not always linear. There may be some issues with optimization, but it’s nothing too severe.
When it’s all said and done, Cornerstone: The Song of Tyrim is a breath of fresh air in the industry, and it has the potential to please many people. As long as the controls are refined and the bugs meet their doom, the final game should be a sight to behold.
