Roguelikes are not for everyone, mainly because the difficulty level is pretty high most of the time. The fact that you lose all of your progress with every death can be too much for casual gamers. However, there are ways to soften the genre a bit, or at least include options for less dedicated gamers to be able to enjoy the games without having to struggle with tough battles.

Claws of Furry is an engaging beat ‘em up with roguelike elements, in which you play the role of a cat with ninja moves trying to rescue its dojo master from an evil dog in a mech suit. The game is designed to cater to both hardcore roguelike fans and casual gamers alike, given the fact that you can tweak the difficulty level quite a bit. The gameplay mechanics seem very refined and enjoyable.

To begin, the cat has a few special moves at its disposal, such as light and heavy attacks, plus a ranged attack and the ability to dodge incoming blows. Your task is to combine these abilities in order to overcome groups of enemies and make it to the end of every level. Naturally, it’s better to aim for combos, because the increased damage output makes battles a lot shorter.

As mentioned before, the difficulty level is adjustable, a lot more than in your average roguelike. Hence, besides being able to make the enemies less tough, you can also change the whole dynamic by switching to a checkpoint-based gameplay. Thus, you can automatically spawn at the last checkpoint if you happen to die and continue from there. However, even in the normal mode you do not lose your skills when you die, which is a nice touch.

The graphics are very nicely designed as well, depending on whether you are a fan of hand-drawn artwork. It’s difficult not to be, on the other hand, especially in the case of Claws of Furry, where every background is incredibly detailed and nicely colored. Granted, the environments tend to become a bit repetitive, but this is barely a demo at this point.

In the end, Claws of Furry comes with a few neat ideas in terms of gameplay and the difficulty level, which should allow more players to enjoy it. Thus, it’s worth keeping an eye on the project as it evolves.
