Mass Effect proved that you can still make original sci-fi games with aliens, especially if the development team and the writers are very creative. On the other hand, it’s definitely not easy to concoct new worlds and races to populate them, while also making them somewhat realistic in certain regards. At the end of the day, the most important factor is to have fun, which can be achieved even with simpler stories.

Choice of the Star Captain is a text-based adventure game in which you get to take the reigns of your own spaceships and explore the galaxy in search of trouble. The focus is on the interaction between you and the ship’s crew, as well as how your decisions affect everyone else. Naturally, the plot itself changes depending on what you choose to do in key moments throughout the adventure.   The story puts you in the role of a spaceship captain, and the plot as a whole revolves around finding and killing Blobs. These Blobs are nasty aliens bent on destruction, or at least that’s what everyone presumes for some reason. You can tell there’s quite a bit of humor involved, so don’t expect a life-changing experience or a very serious tale.

As is the case with most games designed with this engine, every scene features multiple options you can pick from, each one of which affects the story as a whole. This allows you to play the game multiple times and see different endings every time, depending on the run in question. In fact, most of the events differ as well , so you can get a lot of play time out of the story.   Since there are no graphics at all, you have to rely on your imagination to do everything, which is great if you are an avid reader and also a veteran of the genre. New players might find it rather annoying in this day and age, but this aspect can be easily ignored if the story keeps you engaged. You can easily find the proper soundtrack to help your imagination along.

Choice of the Star Captain is not as complex as some players might hope, but it’s definitely fun and entertaining. Hence, you can have a great time with it, especially if you like to do multiple playthroughs.
