Casual games do not need a convoluted story to lure players, since the whole point is for them to be as simple and as approachable as possible in most regards. However, simplicity is often confused with repetition and mediocrity, because it’s perfectly possible to design something simple that’s not actually an insult to anyone’s intelligence. Hence, it’s a tough balancing act sometimes, depending on the developer.
Chimeras: Mark of Death is a hidden object adventure game in which you tackle a mystery involving a few murders and a criminal that apparently escaped justice. It’s difficult to find new ideas in the genre, and the game at hand does not make any efforts in this direction either, but that’s not usually a problem. In this case, however, things get a bit too repetitive and annoying after a while.
The story revolves around an old case that appeared to have been solved by the investigators with ease. However, twelve years later the murderer strikes again, even if he was supposedly executed at the time. Naturally, your goal is to get to the bottom of the mystery and find the real culprit, although various supernatural events keep you from getting an answer too quickly.
Business goes as usual when it comes to the gameplay, which means that your goal is to pay attention to every scene and find all the useful items. Every now and again a puzzle blocks your path, but they are usually fairly straightforward. In fact, they can get very repetitive and annoying after a while, depending on your experience with the genre.
Thankfully, the visual component is satisfactory, especially in terms of environments and the level of detail when it comes to the backgrounds. Every scene has a unique vibe and atmosphere, so even if the story is not always exciting, at least there’s something nice to look at. On top of that, the cutscenes and the soundtrack work well together most of the time.
In the end, Chimeras: Mark of Death does not impress in terms of story progression or the puzzles, but it can still be a fun adventure if you are a fan of the genre. It’s a pleasure to admire the environments along the way.
