Whenever the fantasy genre comes into the picture, people usually imagine orcs, elves and wizards that wield tremendous powers. In the case of RPGs, gamers expect to be able to control the story and manage their characters in as much detail as possible. Hence, it’s all about being able to use magic swords and powerful spells yourself, not just see others do it.
Captive of Fortune is a text-based adventure game that’s part of the Trial of the Demon Hunter series, and it closes the saga by allowing you to finally confront the enemy you have been chasing throughout the previous games. It doesn’t stray very far from the formula used by the previous games, but this episode also features a bit of artwork to help you along, as well as a soundtrack.
You start by importing your character from a previous session, but you are not forced to do so, because it is also possible to create a new one from scratch. Instead of attribute points and sliders, you customize your alter ego by answering a few questions, which in turn affect your skills and abilities. Granted, all of them can evolve along the way too, so you are not stuck with your choices.
The story is pretty dynamic, which means that the action is left entirely up to you. It’s possible to avoid confrontations, use particular skills to incite a battle, as well as talk your way out of nasty situations. On top of all that, you can pursue a romantic relationship if you fancy a character along the way, and there are no limitations when it comes to sexual orientation or anything of the sort.
As mentioned before, Captive of Fortune is a tad different from most text-based adventure games, mainly because it features a soundtrack from time to time. There are also some illustrations to depict some of the places you visit, which should give your imagination a boost when you feel like things are a bit too complicated to envision them in your head.
It’s always nice to experience a trilogy, and Captive of Fortune seems to tie the plot in a pretty knot at the end. Hence, it’s definitely worth a shot if you had a good time with the previous two titles.
