Although children have a pretty wild imagination and they can work with basically anything, as long as it is colorful and it has something fluffy in it, games like Candy World IV: A Dream of Lillians are pretty hard to classify and categorize. In essence, most of the things that happen in the game are very weird and difficult to call either good or bad, so you might have to judge it for yourself in order to come to a conclusion.
At a first glance, there’s not much difference between Candy World IV: A Dream of Lillians and the previous episodes, except for maybe the slightly improved graphics engine. However, you quickly realize that this time around you have a companion with you, which is actually another dog by the name of Toopy. Beside the fact that it will follow you everywhere, it can also collect the items for you if you do not feel like it.
Hence, your main purpose throughout the game is to collect the bones made of candy, as well as various other sweets and treats you can find around the world. Speaking of which, you are still free to roam the islands as you see fit, as well as climb in top of the few structures you get to see and fight with the creatures that pose a threat to you and Toopy.
Speaking of which, the islands you get to explore are just as barren and devoid of anything interesting as they were in the first couple of episodes. Hence, beside smooth grass, a lot of water, and the occasional tree here and there, there’s nothing else to look at. It’s a shame, too, because the worlds are rather big and you could certainly fit a lot of nice stuff on them.
Not only that, but the graphics are pretty nice as well, at least for a children’s game. The textures look good and there are a few special effects decorating the scenes as well, albeit nothing too fancy. Calming tunes play in the background at all times, which make the atmosphere that much more friendly and innocent.
All things considered, Candy World IV: A Dream of Lillians could have done a bit more with what it had, especially when it comes to content. Hence, the barren landscapes can seriously harm the experience, especially if you happen to get bored easily and you get distracted if nothing interesting is happening for long stretches of time.
