Dogs are universally regarded as good pets and extremely intelligent, which is why they are also used as livestock guardians, guides for blind people, or even as rescue dogs during disasters. However, they still enjoy the simple things, such as running through parks and playing catch with their masters. Food is another one of their hobbies, right there with sleeping and causing havoc around the house when you are not around.
Candy World: The Golden Bones is a fun arcade game that allows you to play as Candy, a dog that's on a mission to collect the magical golden bones and unlock the way into many other fascinating lands beyond the portals. Along the way, Candy can also go head to head with enemy creatures, as well as explore an open world filled with trees, lakes and various other landmarks.
The other main quest challenges you to find a rubber ball and bring it back to your friend, in order to go back to playing catch and having a good time. Along the way, you can also unravel the mystery regarding a mildly interesting background story, which involves a few other dogs and a bit of insight into what they usually dream about when the lights go out.
Paying the game per se is very simple and intuitive, since all you need to do is use the directional keys in order to move and a large assortment of other buttons if you want to perform some other actions. For example, the dog can also jump whenever you want it to, as well as run incredibly fast and attack hostile creatures in order to eliminate their threat.
Technically, a lot more work could have went into the physics engine and the mechanics themselves, since the game feels very rugged and inflexible. The graphics are not exactly bad, but the environments are very repetitive and the fields usually lack pretty much any kind of visual detail, except for the occasional tree and butterfly. Moreover, some special effects are a bit too exaggerated, such as the reflection from the moon during nighttime.
All things considered, Candy World: The Golden Bones can be a fun and exciting adventure, as long as you do not mind the silly gameplay mechanics and the repetitive environments. The main quest is pretty juvenile and the story itself lacks depth, although that is only natural, considering the fat that the target audience is too young to care about solid characters arcs.
