Since the first title in the Call of Duty series has redefined the way gamers look at shooters, a lot of other games have tried to emulate the same feeling and gameplay mechanics, in order to provide the same experience. Naturally, the best one to follow the first game is its official sequel, called simply Call of Duty 2.
This second installment brings a vast array of improvements over the first title, most of which can be observed in the gameplay and the superior cutscene sequences scattered throughout the game, which give it the original Call of Duty feeling. Thus, the campaign allows you to play as four different individuals and follow their respective stories across a multitude of missions.
The battles you take part in are significantly bigger, with more troops and enemies on the screen at the same time, all of which are trying to stop you from advancing and achieving your objectives. In this regard, the AI has been improved as well, making it almost imperative to spend more time in cover and avoid large groups of enemies, since they can quickly take you down.
Another interesting addition is the fact that you can now make a few choices during some of the more important moments in the story, which affect the way you continue playing. Hence, you are put in the situation of having to decide whether you want to play as a tank commander or as a sniper, depending on how you are most comfortable. You do, however, miss the opportunity to experience the other option whenever you make one of these choices, which should convince you to replay the game a few times, until you view all of its content.
As expected, the sequel outshines its older sibling when it comes to graphics as well, since it features a much more powerful engine. This allows for much more detailed objects and special effects, as well as convincing dynamic lighting, shadows and a variety of beautiful weather effects that improve the overall experience. The sound has been refined too, with exquisite voice acting and appropriate gun shots, explosions and vehicle noises.
There very few bad things that can be said about Call of Duty 2, since it manages to hit all the right spots in the sound, atmosphere and graphic departments. The only annoying thing is that the action is sometimes too fragmented and scripted, with a few too many cutscenes that take control from you.
