There are plenty of popular TV shows out there, but very few come close to the giant that is CSI. Although it has been running for quite a few years now, its audience keeps on growing every day, making it one of the most watched television shows in the world. Plenty of famous actors made an appearance as the seasons kept rolling, some of which even played recurring characters.
CSI: Hard Evidence is a point-and-click adventure game developed by Telltale Games and it aims to provide you with a much more personal insight into what it means to be part of the team that hunts the most dangerous criminals in the world. In essence, your job is to examine crime scenes, gather evidence and put it all together once you have the right suspect, which means that you technically have to do everything by yourself.
The cases are not extraordinarily difficult, but they are not very simple either. There are five cases to go through over the course of the game, each one of which poses a different kind of challenge. As an example, one of the murders involves four rock band members that are found electrocuted in their studio and you must figure out how that happened, starting with very little evidence.
Although Telltale has the deserving reputation of being very thorough when it comes to gameplay and the story, they didn’t really work too hard on this one, given the rather poor script quality and the unimpressive gameplay. Moreover, the tasks you have to perform are repetitive as well, which is made even worse by the fact that they are boring on top of it.
As far as the visual chapter is concerned, the graphics look quite decent, especially when it comes to the characters portrayed after the actors that play them in the show. The same goes for the environments, but they are not very interesting to begin with, so it doesn’t really matter whether they are good-looking or not, as long as there’s not much to see.
CSI: Hard Evidence may have a very big name behind it, but that doesn’t mean it cannot fail just as easy as a regular adventure game. The boring gameplay and uninteresting cases don’t make for a very strong pro argument, even if the minds behind the game can do a lot better than this.
