The CSI TV show has been going strong for quite a few years now, with some rather big names from the industry attached to it when it comes to actors and writers. However, there are also a few video games out there, inspired by the show, but not that well received by the general public. Unfortunately, this latest episode doesn’t fare very well either and the reasons are more or less the same.
CSI: Fatal Conspiracy is an adventure games developed by Ubisoft in which you get the chance to play as your favorite characters from the TV show, including Nick Stokes, Catherine Willows and Ray Langston. Moreover, Laurence Fishburne voices himself in the game as well, which should make the experience that much more exciting and close to the atmosphere from the show itself.
As far as the story is concerned, you are supposed to investigate and catch the leader of a powerful drug cartel, but the game is actually split into separate cases. Thus, you complete one case and you move on to the next one, meeting other characters and visiting other locations in the meantime. These cases involve interesting murders, all of which must be solved using the massive arsenal of tools and machinery used by forensic detectives.
Just like in the other video game episodes, your main purpose is to investigate the crime scene and gather evidence, which is achieved by observing the environment, collecting fibers, blood samples, and various other items of interest. These can then be analyzed at the lab, which is equipped with most of the machinery you can admire in the TV show as well. The tools are not very fun to play around with, on the other hand, since you just have to feed them the evidence and perform some simple mini-game to ‘enhance’ the results.
You can also interrogate suspects and have conversations with witnesses, all of which can come in handy during the investigation. These sequences are obviously not as intense as you might believe, since the dialogue is about as mediocre as the one from the TV show, given the fact that the cases are written and developed by the same writers.
All things considered, the developers could done so much more with CSI: Fatal Conspiracy, yet they chose to produce another mediocre product that will be quickly forgotten a few days after its release. Thus, unless you are a really big fan of the TV show, there aren’t too many reasons to give the game a try.
