Shoot ‘em ups are still fairly popular in the world of video games, even if the genre can look a bit outdated nowadays. The gameplay mechanics are what keep the players coming back, given the fact that the games are designed to really push your patience and test your reaction times. On the other hand, it’s difficult to innovate after so many years, especially since the gameplay is fairly simple to begin with.

Burst Fighter is a retro shoot ‘em up in which you get to fight aliens and improve your spaceship with a variety of powerful parts that make the action even more exciting. In order to live up to the genre’s reputation, the game features fast-paced mechanics, as well as more than enough boss battles that should put you through hell. It’s not easy to get to the end, but at least there are three difficulty levels to choose from.

The story is nothing to write home about, but it’s not incredibly boring either. In essence, everything revolves around Zirodia, a peaceful planet that is invaded by some kind of mechanical aliens bent on destruction. Your goal is to acquire some special technology needed to defeat them, as well as get to the home planet of the invaders and destroy them once and for all.

As mentioned before, the gameplay is definitely fast-paced, which means that you constantly have to move and shoot as quickly as you can in order to avoid enemy projectiles and return fire. Your ship can be customized with a variety of parts, and you can even choose color patterns in order to make your spacecraft unique. To top things off, there’s even a melee weapon that allows you to attack enemies in a much more personal way.

You can also enjoy the adventure together with a friend thanks to the two player co-op mode, although the difficulty level increases a bit as well. Speaking of which, there are three difficulty modes to choose from, each one of which caters to a specific category of players, depending on whether you are a complete beginner or an expert in the genre. Not much can be said about the graphics, but they are colorful and detailed enough not to be a burden on the eyes.

In the end, Burst Fighter is far from an original concept, since it borrows many of its elements from other games out there, but the developers have managed to blend everything quite nicely. Thus, the game is guaranteed to keep you busy for many hours if you enjoy bullet hell adventures.
