Card games are a wonderful distraction when a few people get together and they decide to have some fun. While some games require you to beat everyone else and try to make it on your own, others are played in teams, which is a lot more relaxing. However, the fun is guaranteed either way, as long as the people involved play it fairly.
Buck Euchre is a simple card game that allows you to practice your skills on computer-controlled players and slowly build the confidence to face real people. Every rule and possibility from the actual game is possible here as well, which means that you can come up with strategies and tactics to apply during the matches, in case you’re serious about Euchre.
On the other hand, it is quite obvious that the AI-controlled players do not react in the same way people do, which means that you have to get used to that aspect. Even so, they can hold their own and get you into trouble every once in a while, especially if you are at the beginning and you are not very familiar with all the rules yet. After a while, their weaknesses begin to show, however.
Just like in Bridge or various other similar card games, the goal is to win tricks and not fall too far behind the other players. In this variation, a penalty is applied to anyone who fails to win any tricks over the entire game. Speaking of which, this variation is played with twenty-four cards, and they come in each of the four standard suits. Moreover, the trump suit ranks differently from the others.
As far as the user interface is concerned, it must be mentioned that the application looks a bit too old-fashioned and sketchy, in the sense that it might take you a while to understand how everything works. The cards themselves are pretty nicely drawn, but there are only there as symbols, not actual objects. Naturally, it is quite easy to ignore this aspect entirely, unless you are a stickler for details.
When it’s all said and done, Buck Euchre may not be gentle on the eye and it may take a while to get used to, but it’s a good way to learn Euchre nonetheless. The AI holds its own most of the time, although advanced players might refute that after a few matches.
