Adventure fans should have no trouble recognizing the Broken Sword titles, especially since they are regarded as some of the best in the genre. Thanks to its challenging puzzles and very well-written story lines, the games have made quite a name for themselves, which should be the case in this episode as well.
Broken Sword: The Angel of Death begins by explaining how George, who has been the main character throughout the franchise, is now busy being a regular guy with a 9-to-5 job, even if he is technically a Knight in an ancient Holy Order and he once fought a dragon. Naturally, trouble is drawn to such an interesting past and things quickly get out of hand yet again.
Everything starts when George notices a very beautiful woman and slowly gets more and more interested into her, until she suddenly disappears without a trace. In order to finder her, he begins searching for a powerful and mysterious artifact, which, obviously, holds too much power to be controlled entirely.
As the series accustomed its fans, the gameplay mechanics remain as intuitive and functional as they always were, thanks to the trademark point-and-click style that makes it very easy for anyone to move around in the game and interact with the environment. On the other hand, the puzzles are definitely not easy at all, which is another greatly appreciated tradition of the Broken Sword titles. Hence, every part of the game requires a lot of tinkering and more than a few hours of clue gathering and research.
Although the graphics were never a strong suit for the franchise, they've always looked quite well, even if the environments were mostly static. The 3D engine that was introduced some time ago is still being used in this installment as well, although it is greatly improved and actually looks very convincing. You might, however, stumble upon some flickering problems and a few camera issues, none of which have any significant impact on the gameplay, though.
Although Broken Sword: The Angel of Death may lack some depth and fail to reach the complexity of the previous episodes, it is still a very good adventure game with more than enough improvements and a lot of tricky puzzles that put your mind to work. It is always a pleasure to see George Stobbart in action, regardless of what mission he undertakes.
