Superheroes own a big chunk of today’s popular media, especially thanks to the multitude of movies and TV shows on the subject. Given the nature of the subject, new ideas are not hard to come by, but it’s really difficult to come up with good ones. People are pretty tired of the perfect hero with a pure heart, which is why many modern character exhibit flaws to make them more relatable, such as Jessica Jones’ alcoholism and nihilism.
Bring Her Home is a first-person exploration game with survival elements, in which you play the role of a wannabe hero by the name of Rayel. The game allows you the freedom to explore as much of the environment as you wish, while also challenging you to keep an eye on your character’s health throughout the journey. It’s definitely not a new idea in terms of gameplay, but the presentation is pretty exciting.
Rayel is the son of a legendary hero, and he is on his way to complete his own graduation from a prestigious superhero academy. Your mission is to rescue an “Anthro American Fox girl” stuck on a barren planet called Earth 333666. As you can tell, the characters in the game are mixtures between people and animals, with the main character himself sporting dog ears, horns and paws.
Since you are basically walking around in a desert, it’s important to eat and drink regularly in order to avoid starvation or dehydration. Thankfully, you get a few supplies after you land on the planet, and it’s your job to use them as efficiently as possible throughout your journey. On the other hand, it’s also possible to form a bond with the girl you are supposed to rescue, mainly by talking to her.
Gameplay-wise, Bring Her Home has a few kinks that need to be ironed out in future versions, especially in terms of movement. The head bobbing is incredibly distracting and nauseating, which is not good news in a game that’s mostly about walking and running. The barren planet is a bit too barren, which means that there’s barely anything to see as you go along, making the journey tedious and boring most of the time, at least in this early demo version.
Lastly, the writing is one of the core elements of the game, but it’s a bit too childish and cringe-worthy most of the time. Characters deliver awful lines without a hint of sarcasm, and you are also expected to care for them with little-to-no introduction, even if the story has apparently been in the making for over a decade now.
Thus, Bring Her Home is not a bad project, but it needs some serious work before it can hit the market as a finished product. The gameplay needs improvement and the writing is not yet up to standards, so it’s important for the developers to consider these things for future releases.
