Great stories are not hard to come by nowadays in the realm of video games, but it really depends on how well the rest of the elements are designed in order to get a memorable experience. Adventure games are a great medium for nice storytelling, especially since you get a lot of time to admire the landscapes and get to know the characters along the way.

Beyond the Sky is a simple point & click adventure game with many puzzles and a very eerie atmosphere, in which you play the role of a young girl as she goes on a quest to reach the moon. The gameplay mechanics are quite enjoyable when it comes to how you interact with the environment, and the puzzles are pretty challenging as well.

The girl’s name is Selena, and she lives in a tower with barely anyone to keep her company. Hence, she dreams of reaching the Moon one day, even if the road there is obviously long and quite dangerous. She must overcome a variety of obstacles along the way, and the game is designed to be as intriguing as possible in terms of puzzles and riddles, much like Myst or similar games.

Another interesting fact is that Selena is slowly learning new things as she explores the world, and these things open up new gameplay mechanics or interactions. Using your ear to listen closely to a certain object can reveal a lot of information in the right cases, but other options become available later on as well. The puzzles can be quite cryptic most of the time, so it takes a bit of concentration to figure out the answers.

The whole thing is presented using a dark and unique artwork style, which helps a lot with the overall atmosphere. Even if the artwork is not particularly detailed, the colors and the nice shading work together nicely to make you feel like you are part of the scenery. The music is very well-chosen too, and so are the various sound effects that animate the environments.

All things considered, Beyond the Sky is still in its alpha days at the moment, but it certainly has the potential to become a fan favorite when the project is completed. Thus, it’s worth a try if you are a point & click fan and you do not mind the cryptic puzzles.
