The joy of playing through a detective story is that you know there are going to be answer at the end, since the game cannot advance if you do not find the proper clues. Hence, the cases always make sense, and there is always one piece of evidence you can use to lead you to the next clue. The developers have to work on the atmosphere and the writing, however, because the case itself is not always relevant.
Beyond the Invisible: Darkness Came is a detective game in which you have to gather clues, solve puzzles and explore a series of creepy locations in order to unravel a mystery. The whole game is presented using dark and gritty landscapes, but your role is to find your way out of the nightmarish locations and maybe even catch a few bad guys along the way.
The story starts when the detective is stopped in the middle of a dark road by a fallen pole, which prevents him from going further. Naturally, you step into the nearest town in order to find help, but as it turns out, things are not very pleasant here. Not only that, it turns out that the whole thing was a trap to get you there, so you must use your wits in order to escape unharmed from the ordeal.
The rest of the game is as straightforward as it gets in the genre, which means that you have to use various items in order to solve puzzles and progress from one scene to the other. There are all sorts of mini-games as well, including mazes and a whole lot of hidden object scenes. Some of the puzzles can be more time-consuming than others, but there are some interesting riddles awaiting you.
As mentioned before, the whole experience is pretty dark and moody, and that is achieved using gritty artwork and nice special effects. Every scene looks like something out of a horror scene, and there’s plenty of detail in the artwork as well. Even the cutscenes are designed to be creepy, in spite of the comic book-style drawings that replace the 2D renders you might be used to.
In the end, Beyond the Invisible: Darkness Came is not nightmare material, but it’s dark enough to make you uneasy and help with the overall atmosphere of the game. Thus, it’s worth a shot if you are into detective stories. NOTE: This is a downloader for the game. Once run, the application will automatically download and install the game on your computer.
