One thing that's fairly certain about fantasy worlds is the fact that there's always at war going on somewhere, or that a great evil is about to descend upon the realm and kill everyone. The different races are also constantly at each other's throats, while the more violent individuals just go ahead and solve their problems using good old axes instead.

Battles of Borghan is a turn-based strategy game that mixes in a large number of elements from other genres, including RPG and RTS. However, the game lacks any kind of storyline or plot, since it all revolves around mercenary clans and the leagues they enter in order to battle other clans. As you might expect, the rewards for the winners include gold, fame and the joy of still being alive, because the losers do not get any of these luxuries.

To start off with, the game asks you to create a new clan and give it a name, after which you jump straight into the action and start bidding for mercenaries. There are over twenty races available, as well as a many classes and specializations that make each individual dangerous out on the battlefield. However, you have to pay for them in order to have them in your clan, otherwise they are snatched by rival clans.

Things are not as simple as hiring the fighters and sending them to battle, however, since there are many more things that need to be taken into consideration. To start off with, they need weapons, as well as armor to protect them from damage. In case you have mages in your roster, they also need to learn new spells, which can also be bought from various merchants that are available.

As previously mentioned, everything takes place in turns, although there are some real-time strategy mechanics involves as well, due to the fact that you must handle a small army most of the time. In between the fights, however, everything is mostly text-based and you generally have to look at statistics, the scheduled fights, or merchant inventories.

The sheer amount of information available in Battles of Norghan should keep you occupied for a few hours, not to mention the actual fighting you have to do once the battles start. Even if the graphics are a bit outdated and the user interface is not very intuitive, the game is worthy of a shot, especially if you fancy yourself as a strategy fan.
