Battle Princess Madelyn is a retro action-platformer sporting fast-paced levels and a few simple RPG elements to keep the action fresh over the course of the story, as well as gorgeous hand-drawn graphics and tight controls. There’s enough variety in the levels and the enemies to keep you from getting bored for quite some time.

As the name says, you play the role of a young night by the name of Madelyn, who goes on a mission to save the kingdom and her family from an evil wizard. The quest takes her through a variety of nasty locations full of enemies, although the landscapes are quite dreamy sometimes as well. Speaking of which, you can enjoy the story more if you decide to stop in various towns and complete quests for the villagers.

Most of your in-game time is spent throwing spears and jumping, since this is still a platformer after all. Hordes of enemies keep you on your toe, but thankfully you also have a companion dog to help you along. In fact, the dog gets stronger throughout the journey, so it’s great to have some help when things get tough. You can also use special abilities and search for unique items, which adds even more diversity to the whole experience.

Lastly, the graphics are clearly a lot more polished than in your average retro platformer, especially when it comes to the sprites and the background artwork. You can tell that the artists know their trade, which makes it easier to get in the proper mood for the adventure. You can also choose from an arcade or an orchestral soundtrack, both of which are very nicely done.

Battle Princess Madelyn is one of the better choices you can make if you are a fan of the action-platformer genre. The replay value is great, especially since it’s possible to adjust the difficulty level.
