Computers may be a lot more powerful today than we ever imagined back when they were invented, but they are also a lot more vulnerable and dangerous when it comes to the kind of damage they can deal if someone manages to break them. Since almost everything runs on computers nowadays, cyber attacks can be devastating, especially if the attackers aim to deal as much damage as possible.

BYTE is a puzzle game in which you have to solve mazes and use Snake-like gameplay mechanics in order to infect computers with malware. It’s not a complicated formula, but the experience can be very addictive if you enjoy solving puzzles and finding your way out of tough mazes. Granted, the game is still in Alpha, which means that there are many things that need to be improved.

To begin with, humor is a very important part of the game, because everything is designed to make you laugh, especially when it comes to dialog. It’s an adventure to be taken lightly, which is great news now when everything is so serious and gray all the time. The gameplay is heavily inspired by Snake, which means that everyone should be able to figure out how to get by from the first few minutes.

The goal of each level is to collect all the orange data blocks, each one of which makes your worm longer. Since the stages are pretty narrow and cramped, it’s important that you plan your moves, otherwise you might find yourself stuck. It’s also wise to avoid collecting the blue data blobs, at least when they are not necessary to solve the level. Speaking of which, there are other obstacles as well, including firewalls and antivirus programs.

These security measures need to be avoided with precision, and it might take you a while to understand just how everything works. On the other hand, there’s a rather lengthy tutorial included with the game, so that shouldn’t be a problem. As for the visual presentation, the graphics are pretty simple, but the design is futuristic and quite nice, at least if you do not mind the 2D engine.

All things considered, BYTE is definitely on the right track, especially when it comes to gameplay mechanics. Hence, as long as more content is added until the final version is released, the game should be quite popular with the crowds.
