Fighting zombies, demons or various other creatures for survival is one thing, but staying alive when nature itself is trying to bring you down is not an easy task. Hence, video games have tremendous success when they face players with situations that require subterfuge and caution instead of pure violence, since it’s a lot scarier to never see your enemy than to shoot dozens of them every minute or so.

BLANK is a first-person survival game with puzzle elements, in which you get to explore deadly environments and do your best to stay alive when everything is trying to end your life. Whether it’s hunger, fatigue or the cold itself, your character is always under pressure to keep moving, find supplies and stay warm, not to mention other scary parts that add a bit of horror to the mix as well.

The story takes place in the not-so-distant future, and you play the role of a convict sent to investigate the cause of the sudden climate change that has the human race on the brink of extinction. As it happens, the terrible cold forced everyone to move south, but scientists are still struggling to find out the reason behind the change, and the only way to do that is to use expendable people with nothing to lose.

Exploration is an important part of the adventure, which is why the game allows you to use vehicles sometimes. They are vital if you want to survive outside, but other devices come in handy along the way too. Some of them can be used to move objects around, while others are more like weapons designed to keep you safe from enemies. Crafting is important too, given the fact that you have to stay alive by any means necessary and use everything you can find to build shelters or put together primitive tools.

Lastly, the game’s graphics are far from complete at this point, so there’s not much to talk about in this regard. It’s unclear whether the game is going to remain this simple in terms of 3D models and textures, but it wouldn’t matter as much if the atmosphere is improved. However, it must be mentioned that there are some performance issues at the moment, including annoying frame drops.

All things considered, BLANK is definitely on the right path, especially in terms of survival elements and the overall atmosphere. It needs some work when it comes to gameplay mechanics and graphics, but the final version is certainly going to address these issues.
