Wargames are not for everyone and they certainly do not try to be either. The developers usually try to please a certain fan base, as well as implement their requests and improve the product until everyone is satisfied. While the public is not exactly huge, it is not exactly small either, which means that there are plenty of developers out there trying to secure a piece of the market.
Armed Task Force takes things one step further and makes matters as realistic as they can be when it comes to interface and the array of options put at your disposal. In fact, you can devise actual military plans with the help of the game, as long as you have the army, the money and the weapons to support such an endeavor, not to mention a good reason.
However, the developers say that even a beginner can jump into the game and figure out the basics, although that is rather difficult to believe, since the user interface can be quite intimidating at a first glance. A hefty manual is delivered with the game, on the other hand, which is definitely good news and the perfect way to understand how to use all the tools that are put at your disposal.
As previously mentioned, the conflicts are modern and you can choose from a variety of battles, most of which are imagined, of course. On the other hand, they are carefully created to mimic realistic situations and provide you with quite the challenge, in order to force you to make use of all the available tools. Moreover, you can even create new scenarios from scratch and import maps made by other players, which basically means you can have as much content as you want.
From a technical point of view, the game’s age is quite visible, but it was never a looker to begin with anyway. The user interface is as simple as it can get, with a bland topographic map and a few splashes of color to signify the units. Obviously, a lot more detail can be overlayed on the map, since you can also display various other parameters as you come up with a strategy.
All things considered, Armored Task Force truly delivers when it comes to depth and the amount of tactics you can come up with. However, it is also quite difficult to pick up if you are not a real fan of the genre and the atmosphere can be lackluster without more visual cues to aid your imagination. Once you get into it, on the other hand, it is pretty hard to let go.
