Certain events are so big, slow and far away that they are imperceptible to a human, given our relatively minuscule lifespan. Hence, scientists have already figured out that the Milky Way is on a collision course with Andromeda, a much larger galaxy nearby. However, the event is to unfold over millions of years, which means that it would be imperceptible to people even if we were to live through it.
Andromeda: There is no God up here is a 2D platformer sporting Metroidvania gameplay elements and a large world for you to explore as you see fit. Survival is your main priority, but it’s also important that you try to uncover as much as you can about the world. You get to switch from the classic 2D platformer view to a vertical shooter perspective every now and again, which helps a lot when it comes to keeping boredom away.
The story is not exactly a masterpiece, especially since there’s nothing very original about it. In short, the Earth becomes uninhabitable and the human race scatters throughout the galaxy. The action takes place millions of years into the future, however, so everyone has pretty much moved on since then. You play the role of a bounty hunter pilot by the name of Max Weaver, who just happens to stumble onto a great, but deadly adventure.
Since the game encourages exploration and free will, the levels are quite open and full of alternative routes, albeit still two-dimensional, so you shouldn’t expect anything too great either. You can jump around, follow the main path or destroy the environment in order to uncover secrets and special rewards. On the other hand, you need to watch out for enemies and traps as well, since nothing is as easy as it seems.
Frustration is a major threat in platformers such as this one, because players are very likely to give up if the difficulty level is too high and the rewards are not worth the effort. Things seem to be fine in this regard with the game at hand, especially since the controls are very responsive and accurate. To make matters even more exciting, you are free to use a NES controller if you have one, just in case you want an extra dose of nostalgia.
All things considered, Andromeda: There is no God up here gets everything right in the demo, but there’s a lot more we’re not seeing. Hence, as long as the exploration part is expanded upon in the full version, this is surely going to cause some waves. You can show your support for the developers by participating in the game’s Kickstarter campaign.
