Lovecraft is one of the most revered horror writers of all times, given the fact that he created some of the most iconic monsters in literature. Hence, in case you are familiar with the famous Cthulhu, then you’ve got Lovecraft to thank for the nightmares. Naturally, there have been plenty of movies and video games based on his work, although not a lot of them are worthy of attention, unfortunately.
Anderson & the Legacy of Cthulhu is a first-person shooter that aims to capture some of the same atmosphere one might find in the books, using a lot of dark corridors and a few monsters here and there. The game is actually a fan-made project and it is realized using the infamous FPS Creator, so do not expect anything too grand when it comes to gameplay, or graphics quality.
The story puts you in the role of Robert D. Anderson, who happens to be a private investigator that gets a job somewhere in Germany. As it turns out, he somehow gets there right as the second World War starts, which makes the situation that much more dire for him. Not only that, but he also stumbles into the lair of a secret occult society called The Order of the Black Sun, which obviously begs to be investigated.
Unfortunately, the game is a tad too crude to be considered anything else than a failure, because nothing really works like it should. The shooting is bland and boring, the levels are small and linear, while the story fades into the background after the first few minutes. There are some live-action cutscenes as well, but not even those are executed well enough to distract you from the rest of the mess.
Speaking of which, the graphics are subpar regardless of how you look at them, especially since the designers did not really bother to include a few modern techniques into the visual aspect. Obviously, it can be understood when you consider the fact that it is a fan-made project, but since it costs money and you have to invest cash into the game in order to play it, some standards need to be respected.
In the end, Anderson & the Legacy of Cthulhu is not something you want to pay for in order to have in your library, regardless of how much you enjoy Lovecraft. The boring gameplay, subpar graphics, and lack of a proper story make the decision a no-brainer if you ever have to decide between this and something from an established studio.
