Alien attacks are a common theme in sci-fi movies, mainly because there are many ways you can spin the idea in order to get something new and exciting. On the other hand, almost every story features some classic tropes that everyone is already sick of, such as the hero who manages to save the day by himself, or the incredibly obvious weak point that brings the alien threat to its knees in a matter of minutes.
Alien Attack in Space is a retro shoot ‘em up with basic graphics and reflex-based gameplay, in which the goal is to shoot all the alien ships that try to do the same to you. There’s not much more to it than that, but then again you can still have a lot of fun with simple ideas. The game at hand is fairly refined when it comes to the action and the gameplay mechanics.
Your only job is to stay alive and try to avoid colliding with either the other ships or their projectiles, which is easier said than done. Every now and again you find a power-up as well, which makes your life easier for a short while, although you still need to watch your movements. Unfortunately, the dull backgrounds might get on your nerves later on, mainly because it feels like you are not advancing at all.
As mentioned before, shoot ‘em up are no fun if you have to struggle with the controls, because you cannot concentrate on the action. Thankfully, all is well in this regard, although you must know that the movement is a bit laggy by design. Hence, it takes a while to counteract inertia if you want to change directions too quickly, so you need to get used to the mechanics before trying anything too wild.
Lastly, the graphics quality is kept to a minimum throughout the adventure, although that is not necessarily a bad thing. What’s really bothersome is the fact that no work went into the backgrounds, so you are constantly looking at a sea of darkness with no discernible details. It would have been a lot nicer to see some kind of artwork instead, but then again this is a fairly small indie production.
Even if you have to lower your expectations a bit when it comes to graphics and content quality, Alien Attack in Space can still deliver a nice experience if you are a fan of the genre. The high difficulty level is always a plus in retro shoot ‘em ups.
