Escape from a weird town by solving puzzles and watching out for traps in this first-person horror game #Horror game #Adventure game #Puzzle game #Puzzle #Horror #Adventure
Most horror games rely on scary monsters and loud jump scares to get a rise out of you, which is not a bad thing at all, but such games are rarely memorable. Hence, players immediately forget the scary parts if the atmosphere as a whole is not horrifying enough to stick with them over the years. Thus, it’s all about creating a unique mood and telling a story at the same time.
Albino Lullaby is a first-person horror game that relies on atmosphere and story to scare the wits out of you, while also challenging you to solve tricky puzzles. The whole thing reeks of David Lynch and similar influences, but that’s not at all a bad thing. In fact, surreal video games are not very common, so it’s nice to see something like this every now and again.
The story puts you in the role of a character who finds himself in some kind of creepy Victorian town, which is also riddled with all sorts of traps and weird machinery that allows you to rotate entire corridors and create new pathways with the press of a button. Naturally, the goal is to escape from this town and make your way to safety before madness takes a hold of you.
The good part is that you are constantly in a state of terror, even if there are no jump scares to keep you on edge. On top of that, the puzzles are designed to disorient you as well, which means that you are always spinning around trying to find your way forward. There are all sorts of monsters in the city as well, but their purpose is not to come toward you in huge numbers, but to slowly creep you out in time.
As for the graphics, the game uses Unreal Engine 4 to render the environments, to there’s nothing to complain about when it comes to lighting quality, reflections and material quality. Sometimes it’s a bit too dark to see the way, but the post-processing effects quickly make you forget about this. Moreover, the sound design is great too, which is a very important part of a horror game.
In the end, Albino Lullaby is a very engaging horror game, not to mention memorable and scary at the same time. Thus, if you are in the mood for something weird and challenging when it comes to the puzzles, this can certainly keep you busy for a while.
