Top-down shooters are not as popular as they used to be, especially since modern engines are now powerful enough to allow anyone to develop fully-3D shooters with much more detail. However, there’s a unique charm when it comes to the top-down perspective, especially since you are encouraged to refine your tactics in order to infiltrate enemy camps without being detected.
Albert Mort - Desert Heat is a top-down shooter with stealth elements, in which your primary goal is to infiltrate enemy bases and conquer them from within. The mechanics are not very refined at this point, especially in the shooting department, but at least you can approach the missions as you see fit, given the fact that the action takes place on open maps and the bases have multiple entry points.
The main character is a mercenary trying to earn a living by completing dangerous contracts for the military, which means that more often than not he is alone in his task. On the other hand, the demo at hand allows you to take a companion along, although the AI is in shambles right now, so he is not much use on the battlefield. The demo mission is very short and underwhelming as well.
Sneaking around is pretty easy, but then again the desert environments can make it tough to stay out of dodge. As long as the enemies are not facing you it’s alright, on the other hand, which is not very realistic. The full experience also promises more weapons and gadgets, not to mention the possibility to drive a variety of vehicles around the levels.
As mentioned before, the gameplay is not very refined, because the aiming system is pretty annoying at the moment. The crosshair auto-lock on the target, but your bullets do not always hit their mark. This is mighty infuriating, especially since you do not have manual control over the crosshair. The graphics are very basic as well, but that could be overlooked if the rest of the game was more enjoyable.
In the end, Albert Mort - Desert Heat might just be up to something here, but not in its current state. Thus, a lot more work is needed in the gameplay department, and better level design wouldn’t hurt either.
