Flight simulators are not usually very popular with the crowds, since they are dedicated to a special group of gamers with specific needs. Whether they feature dogfights above Europe during the second World War, or endless streams of lasers while orbiting around exoplanets, such games can strike gold with a variety of different recipes.
Aerial Strike: The Yager Missions is nothing else than Yager under the name it was released in North America. In case you were not aware of it under any of these pseudonyms, the game is basically an arcade flight simulator with beautiful graphics and simple gameplay mechanics, fit for everyone interested in the genre. To make matters more exciting, the action takes place in the future, on a desolated Earth ruled by ruthless corporations.
As such, you play the role of a mercenary who's undertaking missions for one of these factions when everything goes horribly wrong. Naturally, the chore of saving the world from destruction falls upon you again and the entire campaign revolves around your exploits and random acts of bravery. A lot of shooting is involved as well, coupled with explosions and close calls.
Gameplay-wise, your primary goal throughout almost every mission is to kill the plethora of enemies that suddenly appear when you are around. There’s not a lot of variety in this regard, but the action is exciting enough not to matter in most parts. The ship is rather difficult to control in the beginning, but it gets more manageable after a while.
One thing that truly shines at the game is the graphics engine, which is quite impressive from a technical point of view, especially when you consider the year the game came out. A lot of work went into the ships and the environment, although the latter can be rather barren and dull every now and again. However, the voice acting is terrible and it can break the immersion on multiple occasions.
In the end, Aerial Strike: The Yager Missions is not exactly good, but it’s not bad enough to stay away from it either. Hence, if you have a soft spot for flight simulators and you can turn a blind eye to some glaring flaws along the way, this can very well be a good purchase, or at least a nice experience. It feels very friendly and smooth, which makes it far more accessible than many titles out there.
