Pokemon is probably one of the most popular franchises out there, especially since it’s two decades old at this point and still kicking hard. In fact, new games are still being developed, as it was the case with the insanely popular Pokemon GO only a year back. Naturally, people are trying to copy the formula and use it in different settings, and sometimes this works quite well.
Abomi Nation is an adventure game designed to come as close to Pokemon as possible without being an actual clone, although it also features some interesting new ideas. In short, the goal is to explore a colorful world, collect cute creatures to fight for you and defeat enemies in order to complete the story. The demo at hand is still fairly basic at this point, but it’s bound to get better later on as the project evolves.
To begin with, you start with a single Abomi to your name and not much of a purpose, since you find yourself on an open map with no clear mission. However, you can walk around and talk to people, as well as get into fights with random creatures or other characters that collect Abomis. Hence, some of the characters guard the map transition areas, so you have to defeat them in order to move on.
The combat is about as basic as it gets at this point, since all you have to do is select the desired Abomi and use one its skills. Whether it’s a simple attack or a defensive spell, sometimes you really need to think things through in order to come out victorious. Naturally, things get even more challenging once you have multiple creatures under your control, since it’s important to combine their skills effectively.
Lastly, it’s worth noting that the game requires a controller in order to be played, because it would appear that the keyboard is not very well integrated for some reason. However, the gamepad works flawlessly, and it’s very easy to understand how to control everything from the first few minutes of game time. The graphics are very basic as well, but they get the point across.
In the end, Abomi Nation is a very enjoyable adventure game, so the project certainly has potential. It looks and plays a bit too much like Pokemon, but if you are a fan of the concept then that shouldn’t bother you too much. Hence, you can support the developers by participating in their Kickstarter campaign.
