However, the gimmick has been exhausted over the years by so many similar games, which is why it’s difficult to find something original anymore. Even so, developers are still trying to bring the fun back at all costs.

A Tale of Toys and Terrors is a cute little horror game that sports a combination of tower defense and CCG mechanics, which means that you get to experience two different sets of rules. It’s actually a lot simpler than it sounds, on the other hand, because you do not have to worry about knowing the intricacies. Instead, your only purpose is to defeat monster after monster as efficiently as possible.

Hence, it all takes place in a child’s bedroom, and you are actually in control of a toy army. This army must do everything in its power to protect the child from all manner of unsettling creatures by deploying defenses around the room. It’s not a very complex system or a very unique plot, but the gameplay as a whole is pretty original, not to mention entertaining.

In case you are wondering how the genre combination works, it’s actually quite simple. Thus, you draw cards like Hearthstone, and you place them around the map in fixed positions, just like in a tower defense flick. The whole thing is turn-based as well, which means that you do not have to react quickly or worry about letting the enemies escape. On top of that, the only enemies are bosses as well, which means that there’s only one of them at a time.

As far as the graphics are concerned, the game features hand-drawn environments and original assets when it comes to the towers and the creatures you have to fight. The whole thing looks pretty artsy, not to mention unsettling sometimes, although it’s clearly a very light horror theme. The same goes for the soundtrack, which is only mildly spooky at best.

Although A Tale of Toys and Terrors is not entirely original, it has the potential to keep you playing for a while, especially if you enjoy strategy games. However, it needs more work before it’s ready to hit the market.
