You’d think that something called “The end of the world” would be pretty final and decisive, but that’s rarely the case. Whether it rains fire or demons invade the realm of the living, there is always someone left to reboot it all after the worst is over. In fact, Armageddon can usually be avoided entirely, at least if there’s one man brave enough to defy all odds.
A Story of the End - Revere is a top-down role-playing game in which you get a chance to see how the world looks after the rapture. It doesn’t look that much different from most games developed with RPG Maker, but there are some interesting additions to keep an eye out for. As an example, the combat system is pretty unique, and so are the quests you must undertake along the way.
Story-wise, you are in control of a character by the name of Troy, who’s on a quest to make the world a better place. He’s not very excited about it at first, but he also gets help from a variety of other characters as he continues his journey. The plot is a mix of humor, religion, and the usual good versus evil, so you probably won’t be taken by surprise at any point.
As mentioned before, the combat is turn-based, but a tad different from the usual formula. Each character gets to spend action points, but you are allowed to make more than one move. Hence, you can stack abilities and skills until you run out of action points, which makes the fights more interesting. It’s also a lot more difficult to predict the results of your actions, on the other hand.
Since this is still a top-down 2D graphics engine, you have to be comfortable with sprites and low-resolution textures. Thankfully, at least the assets are original and quite nicely drawn, which makes the world a bit more worthy of exploration. The music is calm and moody as well, although it might get repetitive after a while if you enjoy long gaming sessions.
When it’s all said and done, A Story of the End - Revere could use some improvements when it comes to dialog and plot. However, it’s probably meant to be a more relaxed adventure, rather than the usual punishing RPGs.
