A Small Robot Story is a 2D platformer with a lot of action and retro graphics, in which you play the role of a little robot trying to make sense of the world around it and find some kind of purpose. The game is actually quite well-polished when it comes to gameplay, not to mention the fact that the levels contain multiple routes and hidden places you can explore in order to stumble onto bonuses.

As for the story, it’s not the most mind-bending series of events ever imagined, but at least it’s quite intriguing from the first few minutes. Hence, you play the role of a robot that boots up and realizes that it has no programmed tasks to tend to. Not only that, but every other robot is extremely hostile and violent, which means that it must fight them in order to explore the environment and get to the bottom of things.

The gameplay is all about getting to the next level by any means necessary, which means that you have to deal with all sorts of enemies and environmental traps. Each enemy robot has different types of attacks that must be avoided, so you are forced to approach them with a different strategy. Granted, it all boils down to shooting them before they shoot you in the end, but the experience is much more pleasant and dynamic than it sounds.

As for the controls, they are designed to be as simple as possible, which holds true, but they are also quite precise and smooth, which matters a lot in a platformer such as this one. Hence, you don’t need to worry about input issues or delays, which makes the platforming sections a lot more rewarding. Speaking of which, the retro graphics are great, even if the pixel count is pretty low. If you are a fan of the old classics, on the other hand, this should really hit home.

All things considered, A Small Robot Story is a lot more polished than you would expect from an indie production of this caliber, even if it’s a pretty simple concept to begin with.
