Science can be described as the magic of our times, because it’s difficult to distinguish it from a magician’s trick if it is advanced enough. However, it’s not really as spectacular to witness as a magic spell, since we only need to remember how imposing Gandalf was in Lord of the Rings. Thus, people are constantly creating stories and universes where magic is as real as it gets.

A More Beautiful World is a visual novel that puts you in the role of a wise wizard by the name of Violetta. Her task is to travel the world and interact with a variety of people, in order to learn more about the common folk and the hardships they have to endure. Naturally, you have no say on the matter, because the game is not exactly interactive. All you can do is watch and read the dialog.

The plot is quite exciting and intriguing, especially since it draws inspiration from a variety of great novels, such as Spice and Wolf or Maoyuu Maou Yuusha. In essence, Violetta is merely an observer trying to understand humanity. Things get more complicated along the way, but most conflicts are inspired by real events from history, so you should be able to follow them with relative ease.

Given the fact that the game pretty much plays itself, it is vital that elements such as artwork and soundtrack work together to create a pleasant atmosphere. They also need to keep you focused on the story and make it easier for you to immerse yourself in the universe at hand. Thankfully, the visuals are top notch, although the artwork is a bit sketchy at the moment. On the other hand, this is merely a demonstration of the first act, so it’s to be expected.

The music is good as well, especially since it fluctuates depending on what’s happening in the story. Most tunes are appropriate for each situation, and some might even stick in your mind for a while. As far as the voice acting is concerned, most of the characters sound more or less decent, but there are some slip ups that ruin the immersion every now and again.

A More Beautiful World should be a treat for visual novel fans, especially since it features such a fresh story. You don’t get to influence the events at all, but this way you can enjoy the experience and relax at the same time.
