Whenever a couple of gamers get together for a few beers and a chat at someone’s house, gaming is obviously part of the evening as well. Whether it’s Mortal Kombat duels or FIFA matches, local co-op games are just as popular today as they were back in the 8-bit days. In fact, there are many modern platformers designed to look like they belong on a SNES.
8Bit Fiesta is a retro platformer packed with all sorts of fun mini-games for you to enjoy with your friends, and it is difficult enough to make everyone cry at some point. Thankfully, you can also enjoy it by yourself in single player mode, which even comes with an interesting story. You’ll need a controller to get the most out of the gameplay, but it is still possible to enjoy the game using a regular keyboard.
The multiplayer is where the fun is at, on the other hand, especially since violence is encouraged. There are battle modes and arenas to fight in, drinking games, simple football mini-games, as well as a variety of challenges and other fun activities. You can even race and engage in bloody deathmatch rounds, and it is that much more fun if you randomize the modes and jump from one to the other in the span of a few minutes.
In case you decide to enjoy the experience alone, 8Bit Fiesta comes through in this regard as well. The story mode is particularly interesting, mainly because you play as Santa trying to stop Hitler from conquering the world. Each level is pretty short, but the difficulty level is through the roof in most cases. Impossible jumps and unforgiving traps make the experience a bit punishing for non-hardcore players.
On the other hand, the controls are very responsive and precise, which is exactly what you want in a platformer that requires pixel-perfect precision. Using a controller makes things easier, but you can pass the stages with a keyboard just as well. As far as the graphics are concerned, the game might not be very pretty, but you don’t get any time to think about it anyway.
In the end, 8Bit Fiesta has more than enough content and game modes to keep you entertained over long periods of time. As long as you can get behind the daunting difficulty level, every mini-games should be a blast in co-op with your friends.
