Bowling is quite the exciting sport for those who enjoy to play it, especially since it requires a bit of experience and plenty of patience. However, computer games are advanced enough nowadays to bring the same experience to your home, complete with realistic physics and the same level of excitement as the real thing.
3D Dream Bowl is a simulator that allows you to experience the joy of bowling from the comfort of your own home, as well as refine your skills this way. Naturally, it may not be as realistic as the actual thing, especially since this is a rather low-budget production, but it can be a lot of fun when you play it with your friends and you do not really care about accurate physics.
Speaking of which, the game provides you with the option to play either against another human being on the same computer, or challenge the CPU to a match. However, the AI is pretty skilled and it can get you into a lot of troubles, at least until you manage to understand the fundamental principles of the game. After that, all that’s left is for you to choose the desired location, because there are multiple alleys you can play on.
Unfortunately, the fun is rather short-lived after you find out that you can simply position the ball on the middle of the alley and score a strike with each hit. Hence, the game becomes boring and predictable quite quickly, so it doesn’t really matter how tough the opponent is. In case you decide not to use this glaring design flaw, the ball can be controlled using the mouse anyway, even after you throw it.
The game does not excel when it comes to the graphic quality either, because the engine is not exactly top-of-the-line. However, it doesn’t look too bad either and it certainly isn’t an eyesore. The music is very repetitive, on the other hand, because each alley has a single track that’s playing on repeat, which gets old really quickly after a few minutes.
All things considered, 3D Dream Bowl could have done a much better job of portraying the sport, especially since it is not very complicated from a physics point of view. Hence, a bit of polishing would have made quite the difference in the end.
