Chess is obviously a very popular board game all over the world, as well as one of the most competitive games on the planet. Naturally, there are many simulations out there for people who want to play the game with each other without being in the same room, or even in the same country. On the other hand, it’s also very important to create capable AI players to test our skills against.
3D Chess is about as simple as the name itself, given the fact that there are no new ideas at play other than a few visual tricks that help you have more fun with the game. In short, it’s a straightforward chess simulation that allows you to switch between a couple of different skins for the pieces, as well as rotate the camera around and even choose various backgrounds.
The gameplay uses natural drag & drop mechanics, which means that you do not have to learn any weird keyboard shortcuts or anything of the sort. Sometimes it can be difficult to click on the right piece of the camera angle is weird, but then again you are free to rectify this with a simple mouse gesture. There are also some bugs you have to watch out for, but they are usually pretty rare.
One of the interesting additions to the game - although in no way original - is the possibility to tackle various puzzles based on set moves. This allows you to practice your outside the box thinking and maybe expand your notions a little bit. You can obviously play the game with another player using the same computer, but a true multiplayer component is unfortunately missing entirely.
One of the other functions that might come in handy if you just want a regular chess practice is the ability to quickly switch to a 2D view and make it way easier to analyze the board. It’s just as easy to switch back if you change your mind, so the flexibility is great in the game. However, the sound effects are somewhat disappointing, even if they don’t matter as much in a chess simulator.
In the end, 3D Chess is hardly a revolutionary simulator, but it doesn’t need to be if all you’re looking for is a simple way to enjoy a game of chess with a friend or with the AI. The puzzles are a great addition to the experience.
