You Doesn't Exist
Help a young man unravel the nature of reality itself while trying to become a knight #Role-playing game #Adventure game #Retro RPG #Adventure #Quest #Role-play
All that’s required in order to make a decent RPG is a good story and a fairly sturdy set of gameplay mechanics, although the latter can be ignored if you are too engaged with the plot and the characters. Hence, the combat aspect is not that important in the grand scheme of things, but this too can be a cornerstone if the developers manage to include some neat mechanics into the mix.
You Doesn't Exist is a retro RPG with simple graphics, in which you are given the role of a young man as he tries to pursue his dreams of becoming a knight. However, you quickly notice the fact that everything about the game looks and feels severely unpolished, which can sap your enthusiasm in a matter of minutes. There are some other annoyances to keep an eye on as well.
The story itself is fairly interesting, on the other hand, because although it sounds like a regular fantasy trope in the beginning, things take a wild turn after a while. Unfortunately, this is not translated very well in the gameplay department, because you still have to grind a lot and explore soul-less locations that look almost copy-pasted.
When you are engaged in dialog or watching crude cutscenes, most of your time is spent walking around the map and interacting with objects. Whether you open chests, enter other people’s houses or engage in combat, everything feels very shallow for some reason. The combat itself is the same turn-based grind like in most RPGs of this type, so it can get on your nerves in record time.
The graphics very disappointing as well, even if they do not usually matter too much when it comes to such games. However, the fact that the environments are usually nothing more than bland expanses of grass, the occasional tree and indigo buildings, it’s difficult to stay positive. The music does not help either, and there’s no sprint function included to at least move faster across the dull maps.
In the end, You Doesn't Exist may have a decent story in there, but it’s very hard to hear it when you are too annoyed by everything else about the game. Hence, you really need a lot of patience in order to get through it.
