Victory Command

Victory Command is the type of MOBA a lot of people have been waiting for. It’s a military themed multiplayer online arena game in which you don’t control a single hero, but rather a small to medium company of units. It’s a game that aims to take the genre into the real sense of tactical combat.

Victory Command is in early access at this time so right from the get-go, be patient with it. First off, you will notice the lack of a tutorial that explains the mechanics of combat, the upgrade system or what you have to do. To oversee this somewhat important fact, let’s assume that most of the people who take an interest in Victory Command have already played at least one MOBA and one RTS game.

Secondly, Victory Command is pretty self-explanatory. You get three initial squads of units: infantry, a fast mobile vehicle company and a few tanks. Each one has its perks, and as you gain combat experience, they can be upgraded to gain new abilities and enhancements. New types of units can also be purchased.

The start with Victory Command will be slow, especially if you go full tank. They’re kind of sluggish but then again they do a good deal of damage. Depending on whether you want to go for quick base infiltrations to capture points or bring the pain, the game has you covered. However, it does take a bit of time and a few games to get into the pace of it all, or rather to understand it.

The maps in Victory Command are great for team-based tactical combat, especially since you get over twenty units on each team. A simple scouting procedure can quickly turn into a full-scale war. Traps can be set, and ambushes are a delight.

In terms of tactical warfare, the game is appealing. It’s still in its early stages of life but it does have a lot of good stuff to work with, and if things go well, it can only get better. One of the things you pick up fast, and it seems that other players do as well, is working together and focusing down the key enemy units. A good offensive or defensive maneuver can turn the tide of any battle, so every click and unit position counts.

Victory Command is a refreshing approach to the MOBA genre. It has a lot to work on when it comes to the GUI, unit AI and other misc stuff but overall the gameplay is solid and, if you give it a chance, it grows on you.
